Say goodbye to that header above. You are now looking at the brand new redesign on this blog. It’s the first facelift this site has received in about five years or so. Let me get you acquainted. First, the biggest change is that there is now a “front page” to this site. Going to the main URL for this site, https://paulburkhart.wordpress.com, you will no longer find a simple blog. You will find a brief intro to the site (and myself), the featured most recent post, a summary of other recent articles, and a list of my favorite posts that have graced this blog. To get to a more “traditional” blog view of the site (with a full, more comprehensive sidebar of links and resources), you now need to click “the Blog“.
The second major change is that each post now has its own, clutter-free, and sidebar-free reading space for you to enjoy. The vast majority of traffic to this site is from my Twitter and Facebook pages, and it’s people going to specific posts. Hardly anyone goes to the front page, or my sorely neglected Author, Site, and Books pages. So, if the people are trying to read specific posts, I want to make that as easy as possible.
Other little things abound that I love as well. The wider margins, the way the theme is flexible and changes as you change the window size, and oh the fonts! I love the fonts in this theme (go Helvetica Nue!).
But there are definitely things that frustrate me. First and foremost–the size of that header. It’s massive, I know. And no, there’s no way to change it that I know of (any tips out there, WordPress community?). Also, I’m still not sure that that particular header (the crucifix) is the most appropriate for the content of this site. I’ll keep looking, but any ideas would be helpful.
So what do you think? Do you like the new theme or did you prefer the old? Or do you just read this site on a feedreader and don’t even visit the main page? Any ideas, critiques, or suggestions?
Thanks for reading, thanks for commenting, and thanks for helping me shape my thinking and understanding of the things I write about, here at the long way home. I pray it’s helpful in some way.
