For the Dead
Eternal Lord God, we remember before you today your faithful servants,
the 20 Libyan martyrs; we pray that, having opened to them the gates of larger life,
you will receive them more and more into your joyful service, that, with all
who have faithfully served you in the past, they may share in your eternal victory.
Almighty God, who, in joy and felicity, lives with the spirits who die in the Lord,
and with the souls of the faithful: We give you heartfelt thanks
for the good examples of your servants, who, even in the fear of their final moments
finished their course in faith, and now find rest and refreshment.
Father of all, we pray for those we love, but see no longer:
Grant them your peace; let perpetual light shine upon them;
in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work through their deaths
the good purpose of your perfect will.
O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those killed by ISIS in your name,
and those whose names we may never know.
Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world,
and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm.
As we honor the past, and mourn the present, may we put our faith in your future;
for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen.
For the Living
O Lord, grant the spirit of faith and courage to us who are bereaved,
that we may have endurance and patience to meet the days to come;
not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your goodness,
and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those we love.
Look with pity, O heavenly Father, upon the people in the areas ruled by ISIS,
who live with injustice, terror, disease, and death as their constant companions.
God, our refuge and strength, bring near the day when wars and pain shall cease,
that earth may know the peace of heaven through Jesus Christ our Lord.
You have bound us–both Christian and Muslim alike–together in a common life.
Have mercy upon us. Help us to eliminate our cruelty to these our neighbors.
Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to deal with one another
without hatred or bitterness, to work together with mutual forbearance and respect.
Make your ways known upon earth, Lord God, your saving power among all peoples.
Renew your Church in holiness and help us to serve you with joy.
Guide the leaders of all nations, that justice may prevail throughout the world.
Make us instruments of your peace and let your glory be over all the earth. Amen
